Moving and Shaking

So, my day started early and with some excitement. I woke up around 2am local time and just a few moments later, I found myself in a magnitude 4.2 earthquake- my first quake ever. It was a little scary, of course, but it was also so early that I wasn't quite sure I was awake enough to be terrified. I managed to go back to sleep and when I woke I ventured out into the 1C weather to Unlimited Pangea Tawhiti, a school much like Albany and Orimiston in premise. The tragedy is that the buildings the school was formerly housed in, including a five-story converted office building, were destroyed and eventually torn down as a result of the earthquakes. The school is now housed in the dormitories of another school on the outskirts of town, much to the detriment of what they are trying to accomplish. That said, there is much resilience among the faculty and students. The rest of the afternoon was essentially spent walking around. The quiet eminating from the central city (where most of the worst damage is) is eerie.

  1. When were the earthquakes that did so much damage to the city and schools? The same that triggered the nuclear disaster in Japan?
